Welcome to my website
I have followed the South African economy closely since the start of our democracy when I worked as a financial journalist.
I have developed many interests but the main focus areas have been economic development and transformation. There have been amazing moments – from working with President Cyril Ramaphosa at the Black Economic Empowerment Commission to spending three days at a meeting of the NEPAD steering committee in Addis Ababa that was chaired by Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and Wiseman Nkuhlu.
I have many ideas about how to create an economy that works for everyone.
This will require bold policy shifts, including a new macroeconomic policy framework that has targets for GDP growth and jobs.
I am part of campaigns for universal basic income and a job guarantee.
I believe in universal public services and that we must take profit out of education, health, electricity and water and provide subsidized mass housing and transport. There must be free basic and tertiary education and healthcare at the point of delivery. We need radical industrial policies and a large increase in infrastructure spending that will help everyone to meet basic needs. I have a pan-African outlook and strong perspectives on international migration and regional integration.
